One of my favourite blogs is Armand Was Here by an Indo chap living in Wellington, NZ. I won’t try and explain why he’s there. He told me once. Something to do with slavery and a failed assassination attempt I think. Anyway, New Zealand is a funny place. Often unintentionally. Here’s a very funny book cover. The original can be found here.

Discovered in the depths of a toy store on the 2nd floor of Tegal Rita Mall, Tegal, Central Java. Shake it and it glows! Scary…

PS We bought a couple as toys for the cats, but talk about epic fail: the cats are both terrified of the beasts.

PPS Mum told me that you can buy these in New Zealand!

Today we visited the botannic gardens in Bogor (which are beautiful). Not far from the Presidential Palace (which is stunning) is a Dutch cemetery dating back to the 18th century. All but one of the tombstones mark the graves of long dead Dutch colonials. Captain J Drury is the lone Englishman buried there. Judging from the inscription, his family was happy to see the back of him!

Sacred to the Memory of Captain J Drury RN Who Died on the 1st of March 1835 Aged 51 Years. Much regretted by his Relations and Friends.

police alert

anyer-001.jpg

Police are on the look-out for a New Zealand couple alleged to have beaten a local Anyer man to death for asking them 32 times whether they wanted to go jet-skiing. The couple, reported to be in their 60s, were last seen speeding away from the crime scene in a silver Honda CRV…

birdcage(d)

Introducing your parents to your friends (and vice versa) is always a risky affair. Thankfully, the Birdcage’s low lighting and six bottles of Kim Crawford sauvignon blanc helped things go relatively smoothly. So far I haven’t had to roll out any of the stunt double friends I had lined up for this trip.
